Through story "One Winter's Day" by M. Christina Butler, practice retell, sentence writing, expressing opinion and making connections with the personal/social competencies through the creation of a self-reflective journal. Story makes learning fun and purposeful. Read a short poem. Make a long scarf and attach "wintery, blizzery" words and phrases in a poem style. Idea: maybe roll it up around a paper towel roll that is decorated to look like a hedgehog. Students may have some ideas of their own to create and play, if they wish. Make connections with the personal/social competencies in the new BC Curriculum. Make a "paper chain of kindness acts" and keep a goal setting and personal evaluative journal that could be used for assessment purposes. List of competencies and journal writing paper included.
Suitable for grade 1, 2 or 1/2.
