Story Retelling Rubric Usage Guide
Oftentimes, to assess a student’s comprehension of reading material we will ask them to retell the story and its events. What is difficult is how to assess this in a numerical way. That’s where this rubric steps in to assist.
This rubric could be used for students who struggle with writing but need to have their reading comprehension assessed.
This rubric would work for tracking IEP goals or as part of the RTI/MTSS process.
By giving story retells a numerical value it is easier to track growth and pinpoint areas of strength and instructional need.
If a certain rubric criterion is not needed, simply eliminate the appropriate boxes and recalculate totals and percentages accordingly.
Use the tally column to track the number of details a student offers you for each criterion.
Use the bottom right box to tally the number of prompts or questions you offered the student to encourage conversation and thinking.
