Story Sequencing Activities {Sort and Write}

Have you ever tried to encourage students to write a story that has a clear sequence of events? How about writing a sequenced retell of a familiar story? It can be very tricky with some story books as students just want to include EVERYTHING! Use these simple story picture cards instead!

This packet of 9 simple stories will allow your students to identify the sequence of events in each and then write about them. They are perfect for very early writers who are ready to make a story of 4-5 simple sentences.

I have provided 2 different writing papers (each in 3 line options) - landscape and portrait -) that students can use to sort their story and then write about each picture.

Please take note again that these are very simple stories. Little learners will find it easier to attempt to write if there is a controlled limit of detail in the sequence of events - this is why I have made the pictures straightforward and simple.

Each of the 9 stories includes:
- sequencing posters (4 pictures that can be sorted into a 'story')
- student backline picture page (cut and glue the pictures into a story order)
- sample completed story that may be used to read/model to the students

The stories included are:

1. Penguin in the Rain (penguin solves the problem of getting wet in the rain)
2. A House for Mouse (mouse leaves home and must find a suitable house)
3. Let's Build a Snowman (basic steps to make a snowman)
4. Plant a Seed (basic steps to grow a flower)
5. Pond Life (frog is sad without friends)
6. A Clean Car (girl solves problem of dirty car)
7. Baby Bird (chick hatches from egg)
8. Butterfly (egg-caterpillar-butterfly stages)
9. Balloons for Friends (friends work together to ensure everyone included)

It is the aim of each packet is to provide you with the resources to have a rich discussion with your students about each picture. Your students will learn the most from the ideas and suggestions of other students as you talk to the class about what is happening in each picture and how the story is unfolded from the images. Please do not expect students to complete this activity to a high standard or understand the written activity without a very well discussed verbal story and modelling of simple writing.
