I don't know about you as a kid, but I HATED it when my teachers gave me a one liner story starter. Like THAT is going to get me into a story? :) I like writing starters like this one so that my students can really start to "see" the characters and story in their head and get some real inspiration. My kids love comparing their different endings. Try starting out with my lesson "Pencil Monster" where students draw pictures to a story, because in this one they draw pictures for the first 3 pages and then continue the story and pictures themselves. In this version I left room for pictures to be made which my 2nd-5th graders liked. For older students who might not want to draw, squish it together to be like a "chapter book." Have fun! BTW, this is based on a true story about my dad and his pet rat.
