For many specialists, transition time with students in the hall or when entering a new room is wasted time. As a speech pathologist, I know that up to a third of my therapy time may be spent transporting students to my room. I cannot afford for this to be unproductive time.
Imagine having one tool that you can use daily or weekly in the hall and when settling into your room to work on listening comprehension, story retelling, and answering questions. Think about what it would look like to have minimal prep and high buy-in from students.
I designed Story of the Week to be a flexible comprehension and retelling tool for a spectrum of language abilities. There are three leveled stories for each photograph. This product includes engaging photographs, three language levels for stories and questions, and a story retelling rubric.
Story of the Week can be presented to students in a variety of ways including (1) as a wearable transition item, (2) with technology (such as a tablet, smart board, or overhead projector), or (3) as a reading passage.
Students develop speaking/listening and language skills aligned with Common Core State Standards:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.3 Identify/describe characters, settings, and events
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.9 Compare and contrast
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.1 Participate in conversations
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.3 Ask and answer questions
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.4 Describe people, places, things, and events
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.6 Express thoughts clearly and in complete sentences
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1 Use standard English grammar
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.6 Use new vocabulary
Story of the Week is a unique program because it provides the opportunity to easily differentiate for individuals with in the group. Although all students use the same high quality, multi-cultural photos, posters and worksheets are divided into the following levels:
Level 1 (Kindergraten-1st grade CCSS level)
Level 2 (2nd-3rd grade CCSS level)
Level 3 (4th-5th+ grade CCSS level)
