These Task Cards provide countless opportunities to help students improve their writing. I have successfully used these from Grade 2 through to 6 and they have always been a smash hit! Here are just a few ways I have used these cards in my classroom. I’d love to hear from you regarding ways you find them successful !
10min Power Writing
Hand out or have students choose a Card. Set the timer for 10mins and let them go ! Having them read out aloud afterwards is a great confidence builder and provides for a public speaking opportunity.
As an extra challenge, at the 5min mark I like to think of a Challenge Word and get them to include it in their story ! This can be great for creating a laugh!
2) As an alternative, select one card only and have the class write individual (or small group) stories on the same topic. Share afterwards with the class and discuss the similarities and differences in story line, etc.
3) Super Sentences or Powerful Paragraphs
For homework, or during a lesson, get students to use the Cards to come up with either a ‘Super Sentence’ or a ‘Powerful Paragraph’.
4) Talking & Listening
Walkabout & Talkabout- (great with ESL/NESB students).
Give each student a card and have them all walk around the room. On the ring of a bell they start a 30sec conversation with the nearest person with each using the card as their opening phrase. Repeat and swap cards intermittently
Use as prompts for role-play activities.
I hope you, and your students, have as much fun using this resource as I have !
