This assignment can be completed with any novel, biography, autobiography, or history book. I often use it as an SSR (Silent Sustained Reading) Response assignment. Students will identify the elements of Plot Development for the purpose of creating a soundtrack for the book, as if it were a movie. This assignment seamlessly moves students from plot development to an analysis of the author's tone and the mood created for the reader. They very much enjoy the opportunity to choose the music for the "soundtrack" of the book, and they hardly notice that they are doing any work. This assignment gets students excited! You will hear them sharing their "genius" with one another when they think of the perfect song to fit into a scene. I really love assignments like this one, because they leave room for students to choose their own book, as the assignment can be used with any book. They are also great to use with a novel you may have read together in class. Also, this activity could be assigned to a cooperative group of students where one student is in charge of delivering each scene. Depending on the amount of time you have, you may prefer to have the product done on poster board.
