This is a simple, versatile activity that is meant to help students gain a general understanding of ANY short story or excerpt from a longer text. It covers all the basic info that a student needs to "know what's going on" in a short story: setting, characters, mood & tone, and major plot points. You could easily give this as homework, extra credit, substitute work, or just a quick in-class assignment before digging deeper into the story.
I am working on my students' endurance and strategies for independent reading, and this has been a great tool to improve their general comprehension when reading by themselves. It's also a handy resource to have in your back pocket for students who are struggling to understand or require graphic organizers on their IEPs.
If you like this assignment, be sure to try my literature summary packet
, which is a similarly generic assignment but more detailed and meant for longer texts.
