Here are 10 stories that I use to teach vocabulary in French 1. For each story I first teach the five to ten new words or phrases through an action or gesture and then I act out the story taking on all the roles myself. Students can then act out a story that is similar but made up on the spot and uses all of the new vocabulary, or you can have them read the story or use it as a script. These stories can also be the basis for TPRS.
The stories are personalized with names of teachers at our school and places in our town. They can be edited to be personalized for your students. They follow the 10 chapters of Bien Dit, though they can be used with another text book or without a text book. The story is label by the chapter it corresponds to and whether it is the first or second vocabulary list of the chapter, for example 8.1 is chapter 8 vocabulary list 1. The vocabulary is listed at the top of the page and the words from the chapter are bolded.
My students and I are attached to the characters in the stories, Alex, Anne, Gilles, Sylvie and Véronique. The stories are episodic like a soap opera and the characters are developed along the way, all while the stories are all extremely simple for the beginning French student.
