This creative activity requires students to identify at least five significant symbols in the novella and then illustrate these symbols -- as a collage or drawing -- on the frontside of the silhouette. On the backside, students will name the symbol and provide a concise explanation for what the item represents. This mini-project serves as an effective character analysis tool and reinforces student knowledge of symbols in literature.
Included in the document is a silhouette, a sheet of instructions that can be cut into fourths and distributed to students, and a full-color student work sample (front-side only). (I also included student samples from Romeo and Juliet and To Kill a Mockingbird to emphasize that the activity is adaptable for any work of literature that you teach.)
Note that the included silhouette is an updated version of the one included on the student samples.
