Pedestrianism was America’s first and favorite spectator sport in the late 1800s, yet today very few people even know of its existence or amazing history. This article examines the life of legendary walker Edward Payson Weston and looks at the glory days of pedestrianism in the late 19th century, when contestants would walk non-stop for six days around a track in front of thousands or trudged across entire continents for a chance at fame and huge cash prizes.
This Common Core-aligned informational reading and assessment can be used in Grades 4-8 depending on your students' ability levels and in a number of ways by teachers (teacher-directed study in class, close reading, independent practice, homework, test prep, etc). This is a high interest article that works equally well with either reluctant readers or in the regular classroom!
