One summer, I tutored a seventh-grade student who read at a high-school level but spelled at a third-grade level. All of the research told me that spelling and reading development were connected, but my experience with him was telling me differently. I did hours of research into his situation as well as spelling techniques, and spelling rules that I could use to help him be successful. A series of game-based lesson plans, Power Points, etc. titled "Strategic Speller" was born from that experience.
This PowerPoint gives specific strategies and tips and tricks for determining whether words end with -ar, -er, or -or. It also provides word lists and two different game-based lesson plans for student practice.
