Included are all 4 Strategies to Comprehend Vocab Assessments. The answer key shows examples of written responses for one of the selections; all four assignments are identical in format. All that differs is the reading content so that students can practice more with different material.
These assessments were born out of my frustration when teaching students strategies for comprehending difficult vocabulary in their reading. I found that just teaching 1 strategy left too many gaps, since each new word may require a new strategy in order to understand it.
These reading assessments show students 5 strategies for comprehending difficult vocabulary, then has them explain their usage of those strategies. All five are listed since they will likely be utilizing multiple strategies to gain understanding.
As I wrote each piece that the students will read, I intentionally chose some words that will be a stretch for all but the highest of readers.
The back page asks students to reflect upon their reading to discover what they learned, what the main idea was, and questions they still have after reading.
Note: Since the strategy "Ask someone to define the word" is given, I would set parameters for what this should look like before turning students loose on this assignment.
