Several years ago I attended a workshop about math vocabulary and writing in math class. I knew I needed to do a better job teaching vocabulary to my students so I took a few of the tips from this workshop and created a poster for my classroom. I spend about 5 minutes everyday at the beginning of the school year going over these strategies with the students. When I give a vocabulary test, I ask the student who did well on the test which strategy they used. Normally, they have used at least one of the strategies listed on the poster. Then I ask a student who didn't do as well on the test what strategy they used. Soon all of the students realize that applying these strategies on a daily/weekly basis improves their test scores. By Christmas, 90% of my students are using at least one of the strategies!
