Unit Overview

1. Germination Investigation (2 days): exploring life cycles

2. Strawberry DNA Extraction: inherited traits

3. Inherited Traits: acquired and inherited physical traits

4. Strawberries as Producers (2 days): producers obtain energy using sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water

5. Strawberry Structures and Functions: the structures and functions of plants for survival (includes other plants)

6. Strawberry Life Cycle: explore and compare the life cycles of strawberries and radishes

7. Illustrating and Comparing Life Cycles: illustrating lima bean and radish life cycles, comparing and contrasting life cycles

8. Strawberries Assessment: assessment for life cycles, plant structures and functions, inherited and acquired physical characteristics, and the needs of producers

4th Grade Life Science Units Bundle:

The skills for each unit will become progressively more difficult and build upon past units, however these can easily be used as stand-alone units.

1. Sea Turtles: Introduction to life science concepts and skills

2. Owls: Continues to challenge students with more difficult food webs and analysis of ecosystems, structures, and life cycles

3. Strawberries: Teaches students more about inherited traits, basic photosynthesis and needs of producers, comparing life cycles, and plant structures and functions

4. Bees: insect life cycles, pollination, structures and functions, inherited traits and learned behaviors, and complex food webs

1. Please check the preview before purchasing.

2. This file is included in the 4th Grade Science Bundle {Texas Edition}.

3. This file is included in the 4th Grade Life Science Units Bundle.

4. Can this be used in 5th grade? Sure! Just make sure that you go deep enough to meet the 5th grade student expectations.

5. Materials for DNA Extraction: gloves, safety goggles, large container of cold rubbing alcohol (70% Isopropyl Alcohol), pipette or eyedropper, trays, Ziploc bags, Strawberries, stirring sticks, paper coffee filters, funnels, plates, beakers or cups, salt, dish soap, test tubes or small narrow clear cups

6. Materials for other activities: strawberries, baggies, lima beans, paper, sharpies, play dough and craft supplies

7. Some lessons in this unit do not require additional materials.

To teach the full extent of the 4th grade life science TEKS, please use all four units in the 4th Grade Life Science Units Bundle.

TEKS:

4.9A investigate that most producers need sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to make their own food, while consumers are dependent on other organisms for food

4.10A explore how structures and functions enable organisms to survive in their environment

4.10B explore and describe examples of traits that are inherited from parents to offspring such as eye color and shapes of leaves and behaviors that are learned such as reading a book and a wolf pack teaching their pups to hunt effectively

4.10C explore, illustrate, and compare life cycles in living organisms such as beetles, crickets, radishes, or lima beans
