Strawberry Shortcake Syllable Sort includes a cover, 3 sort mats, strawberry cards, and a record sheet. The words on the strawberry cards are either 1 syllable, 2 syllables, or 3 syllables.
To prepare this activity glue the cover sheet on the front of a file folder or manila envelope, which will be used to store the other items. The sort mats can be cut out. Finally, cut the strawberries out. I like to laminate mine for durability. Although it means cutting the items twice I have found the pieces last much longer if they are cut out before laminating.
Strawberry Shortcake Syllable Sort can be used with the whole class, small group, or independently. A record sheet is included which helps to make this a great center activity. You can use a few of the words to model how to clap the number of syllables and then demonstrate placement of the strawberry on the appropriate sort mat. My students say a word and clap its parts. The number of claps determines the number of syllables.
If your students are not ready for multi-syllabic words you can just use the 1 syllable sort mat and the 1 syllable strawberry cards. Throw in some of the 2 syllable strawberry cards as distractors. Then add the 2 syllable strawberry cards when they are ready. Do the same when they have reached the 3 syllable sort level.
