Informational reading is an essential piece of the Common Core ELA standards. Making sense of differing view points on the same topic is the beginning of critical thinking.
The subject of my product is a ban on single-use, plastic straws and coffee stirrers set to go into effect for the city of Seattle on July of 2018. Product includes three informational articles; one gives the background of the ban, another offers opinions in support and the last offers an opposing view point. Students are asked to answer questions about the text which include basic comprehension questions as well as acquiring vocabulary terms in context. Students are then asked to complete T-chart of each article (T-charts included) in preparation for writing their own opinion piece. An outline of the students' own writing pieces is also included.
This is a take-and-go product which requires very little prep. for the teacher. Everything you need to guide your students to create a solid opinion piece of writing is provided whether this is the first time or one of many such opinion-piece writings you've done with your kids.
It is difficult to find a textbook that adequately presents informational articles that are both timely and effective in meeting these standards. This product aims to help fill that gap in its own, small way.
