Getting kids outside to experience science is a priority in my class. One of my favorite middle school activities is to have students do stream testing. Kids can read and understand how to use test kits, but they often struggle with what each of the chemical parameters means. The purpose of this product is to help the kids learn about basic stream chemistry parameters at the middle school level. This allows me to take a class outside to assess a stream without being concerned about their underlying understanding of chemistry. Please note, this is written at a conceptual level for grades 6 to 8 and is meant to serve as a foundation for future learning. For example, stream testing pH and talking about its impact on fish will give chemistry lessons in the classroom context that help improve student understanding.
