A lesson designed to explore how stream health is affected by land use and non-living variables using provided data and to engage with an online stream mapping tool to investigate the “big picture” of stream health.
Use water quality data presented in a visual format along with the USGS Streamer site to identify four unknown waterways. The stream health data presented in a visual map format will include abiotic variables of pH, temperature, turbidity, & dissolved oxygen. The Streamer site will be used to collect background information on physical conditions around each of the 4 waterways, such as river length, population, and land use.
One goal of this investigation is to discover how physical conditions around a waterway as well as natural abiotic components affect stream health. A secondary goal will be to use the data from the unknown waterway and Streamer to match up which waterway the data is from.
