This stream ecology unit is a great hands-on project that involves a lot of equipment, working outdoors in small groups, observations, writing, and critical thinking skills. Students work in four groups studying various parameters of stream ecology: Water Chemistry, Stream Velocity and Flow, Biological Indicators, and Habitat Survey/Samples. This unit has a 21 page student booklet with online tutorials and questions, a note outline, online research and instructions for all four groups. I have also included some notes on how to get equipment, safety issues and a recommended unit plan outline. I use about 2 days a week for 4 weeks, and 3 days in the week before and the week after the 4 trips to the stream..
Note: Unless you have a stream on school property, this unit will involve four field trips to a local stream.
