The objective is to understand the concept of stream of consciousness writing – e.g. James Joyce, Virginia Woolf - and also, to understand how the technique helps in relating a convincing, cohesive personal narrative.
This lesson can be used as an anticipatory set activity prior to teaching a "stream of consciousness" style work or as a summative quiz for a lesson on personal narratives.
Ultimately, students should recognize that combining all sentences on the activity sheet should create a conversational narrative with an obvious train of thought. Also,on the topic of style, my product entitled, "Writing Expression," expands on the use of ideas as transitions.
