Strega Nona is a humorous and memorable tale by Tomie dePaola that makes for the perfect interactive read-aloud. Use some or all of the discussion prompts provided to create a rich reading experience for your students. The Reader's Theater script can be used with the whole class and includes the role of narrator, Big Anthony, Strega Nona and villagers. Alternatively, it works very well in small groups (which allows for more students to have speaking parts).
Students will use textual evidence to answer questions on a multiple choice/short answer comprehension quiz. Additionally, students will apply concepts of argumentative writing as they write a letter of apology from Big Anthony to Strega Nona to convince her to let him keep his job. Students can also test out their poetry skills by creating a new spell for Strega Nona.
