When my students asked to review several key components of essay writing that were still tripping them up, I created this simple, interactive review activity. It challenges students to think critically about what distinguishes an attention grabber from a thesis statement or a thesis from a takeaway ending (concluding statement), while providing them with additional exposure to strong examples of each.
I, personally, found it helpful to laminate the essay components and cut them out in advance, but it is certainly not necessary. I have also included a graphic organizer to aid students in sorting. You might find it helpful to provide each student/group with three of these, one for each prompt.
To differentiate, you might wish to point out the prompts for students who might be easily overwhelmed.
An answer key is included.
