"Stretchy Snake" is a decoding strategy that can be taught to help students when they approach a word they don't know. Stretchy Snake teaches them not only to look at the first letter of the word and make the first sound, but also to sound out each sound in the word. (Stretchy Snake is a part of the beanie baby reading animal strategies concept.)
This packet includes
-2 Stretchy Snake strategy posters (BW and color)
- 4 Stretchy Snake practice pages with detachable bookmarks
Students look at the picture and circle the word that is correct. They
will need to sound out the entire word in order to determine which is
the word that matches the picture. I use these practice pages both
to model the strategy and to assess their progress.
- 6 page emergent reader "Visiting the Zoo"
Students read the book and when they come to the underlined
words, they circle the correct word by using stretchy snake and
sounding out each word.
