The ability to segment words into individual phonemes (sounds) and blend them together is a crucial skill for beginning readers. This skill will help readers take a word like flag and segment the word into /f/ /l/ /a/ /g/ and then blend it together to decode and read the word correctly.
Stretchy Snake helps young readers stretch out sounds and blend them together in this fun and engaging bingo game packet. There are 5 different bingo games that can be used as part of your Guided Reading groups or RtI groups for your struggling readers.
The teacher reads the sounds to the players. The child hears the sounds /d/ /i/ /p/ and mentally blends the sounds together and covers the picture on his/her game board. The first player to cover all of his/her pictures is the winner. The child can then call all of the pictures that were covered or segment the sounds for each picture as he/she calls the card to the teacher.
There are also assessments for the children to practice segmenting phonemes.
Included in the packet are:
*5 different games with 6 cards in each set (a total of 30 cards) plus calling cards
*12 assessments: 2 for each short vowel and 2 mixed vowel
Stretchy Snake will always help your children remember to stretch out those sounds when they come to an unknown word.
