This activity supports TEKS 4.5A of the new Texas Math Standards: Representing multi-step problems using strip diagrams and equations with a letter standing for the unknown.
Included are 24 "flip it" task cards that will help your fourth grade student understand the relationship between strip diagrams, equations and word problems.
You can use these task cards in two ways. With the green side facing up, students will translate strip diagrams into equations (cards 1-16) and translate word problems into strip diagrams and equations (cards 17 - 24). With the blue side up (cards 1-16) students will translate equations into strip diagrams. When students answer a task card, they simply "flip it" over to the other side to see if they are correct.
Task cards 17 - 24 are "flip it" style only for the green side facing up.
Students can use all of these task cards (either side) to solve for "x". Answers for the value of "x" (the unknown) are provided on the answer key included with this product.
Also included are an answer document, a game board, and an extension activity.
There are several different ways to use these task cards. They make a wonderful spiral activity to put in stations, or can be used as a guided math activity, early finisher activity or as a whole group "SCOOT" game.
I hope you find this activity helpful in your class.
