Introduction/My New PARCC Materials:
Turn on the news (be it online, radio, or television) and you will bound to find more and more stories about the upcoming PARCC assessment. Currently being rolled out in twenty states, this standardized test definitely has its share of controversy.
With that being said, we as teachers still have the assignment of assisting our students in preparing for this upcoming test. Regardless of where we stand on the issue, I personally believe that I still have a responsibility to my students to prepare them to the best of my ability to this new style of test. Also, as I am sure many of you have also witnessed, many of students are exhibiting what i refer to as higher levels of "testing stress" where they just plain old get really nervous while taking tests.
Therefore, I am posting my PARCC materials to Teachers Pay Teachers with the hope that others can also use them to both assist their students in test preparation. My other hope is that by students using these materials they will be have a higher level of confidence going into the test. (both the midyear as well as the end of year versions)
"Strive for Five" PARCC Helpful Strategies for the ELA Research Task Simulation:
In my classroom I have been teaching the components of Research Task Simulation since December. Over the course of the next few days I plan to share many of my lessons with the Teacher Pay Teachers community. The first lesson/handout I am posting is, "Strive for Five" PARCC Helpful Strategies for the ELA Research Task Simulation." This handout is a great tool to share with both students and staff alike as a reference tool for how to write an essay answer for the research task simulation that should meet all of the criteria as laid out by PARCC.
On the front of the handout you will find what I created, which is what I refer to is as my, "Strive for Five." These are the top five things students should aim for when answering the Research Task Simulation. For example, one of the suggestions from the top five list is, "Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse formats and media." The top five from this list have curated by me and are specifically geared towards the Research Simulation Task.
On the back of the handout is a list of twenty possible types of content that could be appear on the Research Task Simulation. Most teachers usually only cover articles and videos in their class practice simulations, therefore missing many possible content choices that might show up on the actual PARCC. This comprehensive list will provide both teachers and students with a starting point as to which to base their PARCC testing practice.
