Open with a POW! and Close with a BANG!
Can’t get your students to start a narrative with anything other than the “Have you ever …???” question? And when it comes to ending a narrative, do they struggle because they don’t know how to end one other than with the words “The End?”
This bundle will help you to help them write creative opening and closing lines with variety!
In this zipped folder
, you will receive the following:
Open with a POW! and Close with a BANG! PDF reference sheets
, containing 13 techniques to open a narrative and 9 different ways to close one. You can view the individual listing for this product here: Opening and Closing Lines for Narratives.
“Goldilocks” Example PowerPoint
, which asks students to imagine that Goldilocks had to write her own narrative about her experiences with the Three Bears. This PowerPoint demonstrates 10 different opening and closing techniques
, using the story as inspiration.
Little Red Riding Hood” Task Cards.
After students see how Goldilocks did it, they attempt to write their own creative openings and closings for the tale of “Little Red Riding Hood.” Twenty task cards
are included that can be used as a center, individual work, or as a small-group activity.
Included with the Task Cards file is an explanation of how I use these activities over a two-day period to help students craft powerful opening and closing lines.
This activity bundle can provide direct support for CCSS ELA Writing Standard 3.A and 3.E on multiple grade levels by engaging and orienting the reader
and demonstrating ways to provide a conclusion that follows from and reflects on what is experienced, observed, or resolved over the course of the narrative.
Not only do students enjoy these examples, but it gives them the ideas and courage to try an opening or closing line that goes beyond the ordinary. And hey — if Goldilocks can do it, so can they!
