Introduction: The Structure of a Poem
An informative handout to introduce the unit; this outlines the main structural components of poetry, which will be looked at in more detail in the other worksheets.

Stanza Structure
INFORMATIVE HANDOUT:This information page explains the line structures of different types of stanzas, and why they are important; it also includes an example of how to analyze the stanza structure of a poem.
PRACTICE WORKSHEET & ANSWER KEY: Students are required to analyze the stanza structure of 3 different poems.

Line Structure
INFORMATIVE HANDOUT:This information page explains the effect of differing line lengths, line breaks, enjambment and caesuras, using actual lines of poetry as examples.
2 x PRACTICE WORKSHEETS & ANSWER KEYS:Students are required to analyze the line structures of two different poems (‘Granadilla’ by Amy Lowell & ‘Grass’ by Carl Sandburg).

Rhythm & Meter
INFORMATIVE HANDOUT: The notes on this page guide students through the process of understanding syllables, syllable stress, foot, and meter. It also explains the names of different types of feet and meter.
PRACTICE WORKSHEET & ANSWER KEY: Students are required to identify stressed and unstressed syllables in single words, and then they have to identify and name the meters of actual lines of poetry.

INFORMATIVE HANDOUT: This informative page explains rhyme, assonance, alliteration, consonance, onomatopoeia and repetition with actual examples from lines of poetry.
PRACTICE WORKSHEET & ANSWER KEY: Students are required to read and analyze six poem extracts, and then label to sound devices used.
