Do you have a student or a child who seems to become angry at the drop of a hat? Does the child’s angry response seem to be out of proportion to the situation? Does the child seem to understand that
stepping away from the situation is the only appropriate response and yet cannot make that step? A break card is a visual support that you/an interventionist can use to remind children to utilize
communication skills or that children can use as an appropriate way to request escape when they need to step away from a situation that causes anxiety or anger. According to Cihak and Gana (2008), self management techniques are effective antecedent intervention techniques. The use of this particular type of self-management technique has been called a variety of different names such as “taking a break,” “cool down time,” or “break cards.” Interventions that have focused on self-regulation have shown to cause increases in on-task behavior and compliance. The use of non-contingent escape from tasks and activities by using break cards has been shown to be an effective way to decrease inappropriate behavior maintained by negative reinforcement.
