Using this structured reading journal, I have turned around even reluctant intermediate writers. The packet included a cover and goal-setting sheet. Term one starts out highly structured with a series of increasingly rigorous prompts that teach students how to quickly and easily summarize both fiction and non-fiction. For term two, students are given space and prompts to use comprehension strategies in addition to summarizing. For subsequent terms, the students just write on regular lined paper, as the process of scaffolding is complete.
