It's no secret that students have a hard time with word problems. They can know how to add and subtract fluently, but if they can't choose the correct operation in a word problem, then they're sunk.
The problem is that we typically only teach the most basic addition and subtraction structures: joining to find the total and taking away to find what's left.
Did you know there are ELEVEN different structures for addition and subtraction problems? This unit includes a chart describing all the structures and 12 story mats using 4 different scenarios (3 mats for each scenario) with sentence frames to help your kiddos understand the different structures in a very concrete way. Examples of each of the 11 structures are included to help guide your instruction.
