This unit synthesizes events and cultural movements from the colonial period to the 20th century under the theme of the struggle to define freedom for all different subunits of society down to the individual. Included are the American Revolution that established the right to freedom from tyranny; the French Revolution that sought to spread same idea in Europe, leading ultimately to Napoleon who attempted to impose an imperial government on Europe; the American Civil War which was the Second American Revolution; and the movements of Industrialization and Romanticism all ending with the emergence of a united German state out of smaller principalities and the eve of World War I.
