This fantastic mentor text is a fictional narrative authored by seven year old Max! It’s a perfect model to use to inspire your students in first through third grade to write their own fictional narratives. Max includes a beginning, middle and end, telling his story in a clear sequential order. He uses transitional phrases, descriptive details and even dialogue. (The only help Max received was with mechanical corrections.)
‘The Sea Buddies’ is the story of Max, the angelfish, who ventures out to make new friends with a clownfish and a blowfish. They have wonderful adventures together in the sea!
His text can be used as a model to teach your students the aspects of the narrative standards as well as the rewards of taking risks in their writing. You might also address how Max had to stretch his writing stamina and stick with his project over time to write this nine page story! (P.S. Max’s created his original artwork with pencil drawings colored with crayons, then scanned into the word document.)
