Keep your students and your teaching organized this year using student binders. I teach 2nd grade and have found one of the best ways to keep order and manage student learning is to use student binders. Kids are never too young to learn organization.
Having kids put papers in folders seems easy enough. Right? We all know how that ends up! Papers end up all over their desks. It is really nice to have a place for your students to keep their work, notes, and resources. Creating student binders is an easy fix. It takes time in the beginning, but it is time well spent. Teaching management and classroom procedures the first couple o weeks of school is a must. Getting the binder all set goes right along with this mindset.
Here are some tips!
- Print the dividers on card stock instead of using page protectors.
- I find it easier to get the "bones" made up before the kids come to school. (Print pages, punch holes, and place them in the binders in the order you want them.)
-Keep the student binders in the classroom. I created a homework divider for this product, but I don't use it. If something goes home, it might not come back...
How do I use it?
- I put student reference materials in them. When someone asks, how many inches are in a foot, I say, "Look it up in your binder!" There just isn't enough wall space to hang all the reference materials we need.
- I actually create whole units and print them out and place them in the binders. When the unit is over, I grade their work. Send home the packet with a letter and a study guide for the upcoming test.
The kids love them. They like feeling like "big kids" and in control of their own binders. Of course, they enjoy opening and closing them too. :)
