It is important that students learn to identify correct and incorrect behaviors. When I encounter students who have a particularly difficult time with this skill, I give them a Book of Choices. The book can be modified for the cognitive level of the child in question.
The general idea behind a Book of Choices is to have a child identify what wrong choice they made (i.e. I pouted when Miss Jennings asked me nicely to do something.) and what better choice they can make next time (i.e. Next time I will take a deep breath and listen to what Miss Jennings says.). This helps students to take responsibility for their actions and recognize better options.
I have found this to be particularly effective with students who pout or refuse to accept responsibility.
