Description

Use your Student Council election as an opportunity to teach your students more about the United States Government, and what it means to elect good leaders. This Unit begins by introducing students to the Three Branches of the United States Government, and then focuses on the Legislative Branch. A comparison is made between Student Council representatives, and representatives in the Legislative branch of our own government. The second part of the unit focuses on good leaders - helping students identify them, and helping students become them. I have also added a section at the end of this unit with suggested programs your Student Council can organize and run.

Student Council elections can be fun, but can also lead to conflict in the classroom. By incorporating Student Council elections into your Social Studies curriculum, you can engage the entire class. This allows you to focus on building community with the class as a whole, versus rushing through a time that is full of great teachable moments.

By making the Student Council election part of the curriculum, you can monitor and tend to the needs of your students. Turning what could be a stressful time in some of their lives, into an enjoyable one.
