I use these bathroom passes with my 8th graders to limit students who want to roam the halls. These passes are used in addition to their normal bathroom and locker breaks. Each student gets one bathroom pass at the beginning of each grading period. Since we are on a 9 week grading period, I give an emergency star for each week. Some students will use their's quickly, but will learn to manage them. I usually hole punch them and print them on a different color of paper for each grading period to make it faster for me to see if one of my students is trying to use an old one. I also write their names vertically down the middle of the stars. I learned early on that putting names at the top or bottom gives them the opportunity to cut off the name and loan the pass out to friends.....they are so clever!!!
Rules for using passes in my class:
-No sharing passes
-If you lose it, I'm sorry
-When you've used your last star, I'm sorry
-Passes do not carry over from one grading period to the next regardless of how many stars you have left
These rules are just suggestions. I always have a student or two who either loses theirs or runs out right at the end of the grading period and then really needs to use the restroom. Exceptions can always be made if you believe it's a true emergency. I also make exceptions and don't require the pass if a child has recently been sick, is coughing and needs water, etc. You know your kids and can tell when they really need to leave!
The passes were created using Google Docs, so you can open it and edit it as needed to accommodate your grading period. Each sheet has passes for 3 kids.I cut them and hole punch them to keep in binders. So if you have 100 kids, you'll just make 34 copies. I always keep a few extras for any new students I get.
