Student Expert Cards: Encourage Student Inquiry

These cards are designed to help you achieve a more student-centered classroom that is driven by student inquiry. Incorporating this strategy in your classroom will help students become holders of knowledge as well as their teachers.

When introducing a new topic or piece of literature, generate a list of related topics or concepts. Give students the opportunity to sign up (using the fillable sign-up sheet included) to be an expert for one or more of the topics, and provide the card templates (best printed on card stock, but paper works too!)

When the topic comes up in the course of your study, or a question related to the topic, the student expert(s) share their knowledge! Students can be experts individually, in small groups, or in pairs.

I have used this strategy with students in 4th through 12th grades, with proper modeling. It is also a great strategy to use across the content areas. Please see this blog post for more information!
