I am not an big advocate of extra credit, but I am a huge advocate of students taking what they learn in my class and taking it into their lives. I love when students notice things outside of class that relate to my class. Or, better yet when I've sparked an interest in a topic that they would like to know more about.
So, when a student asks me, "What can I do for extra credit?" I pass the ball back to them and tell them: Extra Credit Proposal.
The students come up with the EC assignment themselves. They are required to write a proposal before they begin and get it approved.
The proposal asks for:
1. What is their eligibility? Meaning have they been consistent with their work so far and/or have they behaved in class.
2. Why do they want to do the work? That is beyond, "I need extra credit"
3. A description.
4. A timeline.
5. Suggested point value
I LOVE doing this because it is not much work for me and they take ownership of what they will learn.
Example: We were reading Fahrenheit 451 and a student chose to go without his cell phone for 2 weeks. During that time he wrote a daily journal. Awesome, right!?
