The A-B-C List of Student-Generated Writing Ideas is a simple tool for getting your students to come up with their own writing topics for journal entries, free writes, or longer narratives. This list comes in handy when you want to change it up from writing to a prompt. My students keep it in their binder (I copy it on a light colored paper) and we go to these topics once a week.
The Common Core Writing Standards aligned with this product are
W. 2 Write explanatory texts to examine a topic/convey ideas
W. 3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences
W.10 Write routinely over extended time frames or shorter time
frames (a single sitting)
This product promotes differentiation as students are able to draw on their strengths and interests as they determine their own topics for writing.

3. Examples of a non-meaningful free write on a self-generated
topic and a meaningful free write on a self-generated topic (just
to make it clear that silly, repetitive writing is not acceptable)
