Get your students (AND FAMILIES) reflecting on their personal learning experiences in the classroom while practicing truly authentic reading and writing skills using these student newsletter journals.
With your review of classroom/thematic content, students can build their own newsletters to communicate classroom learning and special events at school to their families at home.
The journals are adapted for k-5, with covers representing each grade level.
The page design is titled by month and offers a choice in format depending on your students level and needs:
Format one: (Designed for younger students) offers a large box for drawing with text lines on the same page and extra text-only pages for writing. The text lines slowly increase in quantity and decrease in line spacing as the year moves along,
Format two: (Designed for older students) offers 4 boxes for drawing (and writing if desired) labelled by content area: reading, writing math, science/social studies. The writing pages are separate so that you may choose the line quantity and spacing based on the needs of your students.
Once students have recorded their events, the journals will be sent home and shared with a family member who will be asked to write a response on that month's 'Family Response Page'. The journals can be sent home once a month or multiple times during the month depending on how frequently you wish to use them.
Two family letters explaining the Family Newsletter Journal are also included. One is targeted for earlier grades who typically use transitional spelling, and one for older grades.
This activity is an engaging way to help bridge the home school connection by offering a tool for communication written by the students themselves! Families will also be part of the learning process as they listen to students' read and their learning, ask about the learning and respond through writing. Students will bring the journals back to school and share with the teacher and/or peers.
These journals can be prepared at the beginning of the school year, by choosing the cover, desired formatting pages, and stapling them together chronologically by month. They will then be ready for school-to home-to school.
OR the pages can be copied & used separately each month, completed during the month or at the end, and then compiled/added to the journal, ready for home communication.
Totally adaptable to your needs!
