Have your students develop leadership, communication skills, and teamwork by giving your students the choice of what they will learn for the day. You can give them a list of options to choose from or brainstorm together. I recommend doing a staff led activity first to model for the students how it should be done. Then have the students vote on their activity and scaffold as necessary.
My students have led sports outings, set up tours of local businesses and scavenger hunts at local area of interest. They will plan the community based outing by deciding what they will do, looking up the history, developing the schedule for the day, if there is a break, determine driving directions and public transportation directions. Each small group is in charge of a slide, they will present the morning of and facilitate the daily activity chosen.
