"In my earlier, intermediate years of school it was very easy for me. Meaning getting an A+ in every class was a piece of cake. When I got to high school I noticed how different it was and how many distractions there are causing my grades to drop! Although this year I hope to meet your needs and I am willing to try my hardest to earn the best grade possible for myself."
This quote was taken from a student letter I received in the first week of school. Although I judged this student by her outward appearance it was great to realize that the student wanted to be successful in my class and the student wanted me to get to know her. The student letter assignment allows me to assess the student's writing skills and to get to know each student beyond just filling out a survey. During the first week of school I assign the student letter assignment for the students to write me about their strengths as a student and to write their story. Every student has a story to tell and they are waiting for you to allow them the opportunity to tell it. I write the students a letter about myself as an exemplar for this assignment and the students love to get to know more about me. It is amazing how willing the students are to open up and to tell you their story. The students may not feel comfortable talking about themselves in front of their peers during class but they are willing to tell you everything in a letter. The students will light up when you discuss what they wrote in their letters with them and they will truly feel that you care because you took the time to get to know the student.
