First off, thank you so much for considering this lesson. I hope this lesson blesses you as it has my students and I!
The main text in this lesson discusses the dozens of armed American militants who have stormed a wildlife refuge in Oregon and taken it over. This article discusses the gist of what is going on and will inform the uninformed of the background leading up to this event as well as what the militants are seeking. Students will be asked to interact on all levels with the text ranging from basic to higher order thinking skills as well as gain valuable insight and understanding about topics important to their life as citizens of their community, state, country and world at large.
What is included:
General outline of how I use the lesson in my classroom (feel free to deviate as you see fit)

Front and back handout with Common Core ELA Standards included
Front and back handout with standards removed
This assignment takes between 15 min and an entire class period depending on how you use it. In general, I usually take up about 30 min. of class time to cover the lesson in its entirety. The breakdown for me is as follows:
Look up vocabulary words either together or independently. I use www.dictionary.com as it will provide the students with the definition, synonyms and a sentence all in one place.
Read the questions and generate sentence starters based upon the strategy of reformulating the question as an answer.
Read the article together out loud.
Allow students time to fill in answers if they did not fill them in during the reading of the text.
Review answers together.
Discuss possible topics and ideas for the paragraph response section.
Hold a classroom discussion reviewing student responses to paragraph response section as time allows.
Once again, thank you so much for downloading this product and please provide your feedback so that I might make changes that will greater assist the learning for all our students!
