According to author John Hattie, author of Visible Learning, self-assessment is one of the most powerful motivators for students. My APUSH students are required to keep their notebook organized with all in-class activities and outside reading notes/learning guides. On assessment days they self-assess their notebook and complete a reflection piece. Encouraging meta-cognitive skills in this way will help students experience more success as they think about what is working, what isn't working, and make adjustments to the way they approach their studies.
The self-assessment is a rubric scale...you will need to modify some of the requirements to match your own textbook (for supplemental activities) and/or personal preferences.
