This packet is meant to be paired with the book “Cages” by Peg Kehret. The books is rated for students ranging in age from 8-12 years old, and I designed this initially for my 6th graders, however the content and story are engaging enough that many of my later 8th grade students who struggled with reading also enjoyed it immensely.
This packet can be printed into a book for each student, or the teacher can use the content to post daily goals on the board if you are doing this project with your entire class and have the students keep a journal in their reading notebooks, or on loose-leaf paper in their binders.
I used this as an independent project towards the end of the year in conjunction with a series of other books. Students could choose to read “Cages” and then could work with a partner to take turns reading chapters aloud. They had to complete the packet though by themselves. I recommend if you go this route to use the reading time to meet with students individually to discuss their progress, or do small group work with students who are struggling with the skill of summary.
Primary Learning Target: Summary
Students will: Create thinking maps to help them summarize their reading. They will also create two written projects at the end of the book. There is a rubric included to help score their project. There is also a bonus project as well that allows student to create a visual representation of a character. This project includes full guidelines and a grading rubric.
