If you have difficulty finding writing assignments for your students, you will like this. It is geared towards a geometry class but can be used in any math class really with some rewording. This is something you can do once per chapter or unit. The students will write a summary of the main ideas of the chapter (using complete sentences) and will have to look over their notes and previous assignments and revisit them in their portfolio. The directions are pretty straightforward but usually the first one you grade will be the hardest. From then on the students will understand and work quietly for 30 minutes to an hour to complete it and turn in to you. I like reading their opinions and and writing comments back to them. The second page is the scoring rubric I used to grade the portfolio. There are two on this page to conserve paper, I cut them apart and attach one to the front of their paper and check of what they have included in the portfolio and give a grade by adding the points. I must warn you, they do take a while to grade, but it was worth it.
