With this writing process tool, you will teach your students to plan and prewrite in a powerful new way.
- A two page template guide/handout for student reference
- A summary of lesson components and prerequisites
- An extensive lesson plan with detailed descriptions of how to teach each section of the planner
- Suggested criteria for feedback and evaluation
- Photographs of a planner in the process of preparation and when completed
New Common Core Standards in Writing require students to "write informative and explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content"(CCR W2).
Use this guide to teach students a self-generated format for planning ideas and organization for a well-developed paragraph or a multi-paragraph paper. Once students have learned this approach, they will become more confident in independently "producing and strengthening their writing" (CCR W5).
THE Core Module Classroom PREWRITING PLANNER
-Students do not need a teacher-created handout to structure pre-writing that leads to well-developed, organized texts
-Adapts to any grade level
-Can be adapted to paragraph planning (topic-thesis/support ideas/conclusion) or essay writing
-When complete, student is prepared with content ideas and an organizational frame
-Does not require all areas to be completed in order (intro/conclusion can be written after the ideas are selected and developed)
-Easy for students and teachers to identify areas that need further development during the planning process
-Easy for teachers to customize focus for instruction
-Can be used for practice; not all planners need to be developed into drafts
-Can be used for assessment of knowledge in content areas when a formal sample of writing is not required
-Students tend to “own” the Prewriting Planner more than a handout template prepared by the teacher.
-Students can create a planner anywhere, anytime-with a sheet of notebook paper and a pencil.
