Looking for a simpler way to encourage student reading at home without requiring parents to fill out a nightly reading log- or to use in combination with a reading log? These Adventure-themed student/parent bookmarks may be exactly what you're looking for!
It's not always easy to encourage student reading at home, but by creating and implementing the use of these simple "book marks," I saw a significant increase in the number of students reading at home every night. During small groups, I simply place a blank sticky note (the smaller Post-It notes are perfect) in the middle of the book mark. Then I place the book mark inside a selected reader and have students take them home for the night. The next day, students know to bring their book marks and readers to the teacher table during small groups. If parents signed the sticky note verifying their child read the book last night, the student earns a Skittle (or other small "treat/prize!").
By using these simple book marks, students are eager to read (with the end goal of a sweet in mind), and parents are much more inclined to quickly sign a sticky note instead of fill out a nightly reading log. The response to these book marks has been overwhelming, and I encourage you to try these in your classroom!
